DAY 1: Arrive Cochin- Upon arrival you will be received and transfer to the hotel. Cochin has been luring wanderers and traders for over 600 years and remains a living homage to its varied colonial past: giant fishing nets influenced by Chinese merchants, a 16th- century synagogue, ancient mosques, Portuguese houses built half a millennia ago and the crumbling residuum of the British Raj. The result is an unlikely blend of medieval Portugal, Holland and an English country village grafted on to the tropical Malabar Coast. It’s a delightful place to spend some time, soak in the history, peruse art galleries and nap in some of the finest heritage accommodation in India. In the afternoon watch “Kathakali” show. This ancient dance, more than 500 years old, is performed by male dancers accompanied by music, telling a story using their eyes, facial muscles, hands and feet. It is essential to arrive on time to see how the dancers put on makeup and dress in their magnificent folk costumes. Also contemplate the demonstration of ‘Kalaripayattu’, considered the oldest of the martial arts and whose nerve center is Kerala. Much more than an organised fighting system in techniques, the martial arts in India are quite a spectacle. Overnight at the Hotel.
DAY 2: Cochin- Breakfast. Morning visit the Jewish Synagogue, constructed in 1568, but destroyed by cannon fire during a Portuguese raid and rebuilt 2 years later. The interiors are captivating with the 19th century glass oil-burning chandeliers from Belgium, gallery for women suspended by slender gilt columns, 18th century hand painted floor tiles from China, elaborately carved ark that bears four scrolls of the Torah, 4th century copper plates with writing decipherable only with the aid of a mirror. Walk through the Jew Town Road and continue on your tour visiting the Dutch Palace.
